About
The NPS Department of Educational Technology provides district-wide support for technology infrastructure, servers, computers, software applications, administrative databases, hosted solutions and online assessment programs. The department is also responsible for the SIMS/EPIMS/SCS data collection and reporting process for the DESE which forms the backbone of all of our student, teacher and staff data collection and analysis. Our department provides staff professional development and ongoing support for the use of hardware, software, hosted applications and assessment programs.
By building a strong foundation of physical infrastructure, security, access to computing devices and services as well as professional development, the department provides the tools that allows NPS teachers, support staff and administrators to fulfill the vision of the NPS technology plan.

Student Tech Literacy Through the Years
- Nantucket Elementary School, Grades K-2
- Nantucket Intermediate School, Grades 3-5
- Cyrus Peirce Middle School, Grades 6-8
- Nantucket High School, Grades 9-12
Nantucket Elementary School, Grades K-2
Nantucket Public Schools understands there is a very careful balance needed for our youngest students between promoting digital literacy and limiting usage of devices. At Nantucket Elementary School, students' introduction to technology starts on school iPads. Time on devices is limited, working up to about 30 minutes per week. School iPads have secure software limiting student access to applications that reinforce lessons taught in the classroom. These apps are Principal & Tech Dept approved (Example: Reading Eggs).
As students progress through Grade 1 and 2, they will be introduced to Chromebooks and the Library's Mac Lab. On these devices, they learn to utilize keyboards, mice, trackpads, and how to access age-appropriate online learning resources (Example: Encyclopedia Britannica Elementary).
Nantucket Intermediate School, Grades 3-5
Students at Nantucket Intermediate School are reintroduced to Chromebooks through our 1:1 device program. With this program, every student has access to their own Chromebook. The Chromebooks are assigned to them for the entire school year and live in the classroom. Students use educational technology to build foundational digital literacy in safe, guided ways. They often learn keyboarding, practice using word processors and presentation tools, and begin conducting simple online research with teacher support. Learning platforms and apps help them collaborate with classmates, demonstrate understanding through multimedia projects, and practice problem-solving with math or science simulations. At the same time, lessons in digital citizenship teach them how to use technology responsibly, preparing them for more advanced work in middle school.
Cyrus Peirce Middle School, Grades 6-8
Students at Cyrus Peirce Middle School continue to deepen their technological literacy as more schoolwork and assignments are completed in the classroom on a device. Students generally have access to their Chromebooks throughout classes. They often work with our learning management platform Schoology to submit classwork and homework assignments, collaborate on projects, and communicate with teachers. Students also practice responsible internet use, online research, and digital citizenship, aligning with the state’s Digital Literacy and Computer Science standards. Interactive tools such as coding apps, simulations, and multimedia creation programs help them begin applying technology for problem-solving, creativity, and communication—skills they will continue to develop in high school and beyond.
Nantucket High School, Grades 9-12
As students progress into high school, their instruction develops technological literacy through coursework, integrated learning, and hands-on experience. The state’s Digital Literacy and Computer Science (DLCS) standards ensure students build skills in computing, digital tools, online safety, and problem-solving. Students use platforms like Google Workspace or Schoology for collaboration, complete projects with digital research and media tools, and may take electives in coding, robotics, or digital/graphic design. These experiences prepare them to apply technology effectively in higher education, careers, and civic life after graduation.

AI Guidelines
We've developed newly released AI Guidelines (adopted from Walpole Public Schools) to support students, staff, and families in navigating this transformative technology. These guidelines provide practical direction, encourage responsible exploration, and ensure AI tools are used in ways that align with our district’s educational values.
Google Workspace and Third Party Consent
Workspace for Education is a set of education productivity tools from Google including Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Classroom, and more used by tens of millions of students and teachers around the world. At the School District of Nantucket, students will use their Google Workspace for Education accounts to complete assignments, communicate with their teachers, sign into their Chromebooks, and learn 21st century digital citizenship skills.
School-Issued Device Agreement
Students in grade 6 and grade 9 are given new Chromebooks each year to use as their own while they are in CPS and NHS, respectively. Students in grades K-5 have Chromebooks available in their classrooms and library for use during school hours.
Student Technology Account Agreement
Parents /Guardians and students are asked to read Nantucket’s Empowered Digital Use Policy and the Acceptable Use Policy including restrictions against accessing inappropriate material on any school-issued devices. We require all parents to help their child to understand the importance of following the rules to ensure safe, responsible, and educational use of all district-provided technology, internet access, devices, and digital resources.
Student Data Privacy
Student Data Privacy
Protecting student data is of paramount importance to Nantucket Public Schools. To that end, Nantucket is a member of the Massachusetts Student Privacy Alliance, which is is a collaboration of Massachusetts school districts that share common concerns around student privacy. The goal of the MSPA is to set standards of both practice and expectations around student privacy such that all parties involved have a common understanding of expectations. To this end, the first outcome of the MSPA is the adoption and implementation of a common Student Data Privacy Agreement to be used by all member schools when implementing any online application. By adopting such a contract all vendors and schools have common expectations when entering into a relationship or implementation without having to renegotiate terms in every new instance.

Get Tech Help
Your first step to get tech help should be to submit a tech ticket. All members of the department monitor this system and will respond promptly. You can submit a ticket in two ways.
► First, students, families and staff can send an email to techhelp@npsk.org and include a description of the issue, your name, building and room number.
► Second, students and staff only can create a ticket directly within the GetHelp ticket system
We strongly discourage emailing a specific technology specialist because your request may be delayed if he or she is occupied with another support call or project. All the technology specialists support requests from all school buildings.

Staff are allowed to connect up to two personal devices on the NPS wireless network. Since our network upgrade, we have two different wireless guest networks: Guest-CPS/NHS and NPS-Alt (which will be used for NIS/NES staff members). There is a different process for each network.
