Arrival & Dismissal Procedures
NES/NIS
September 2026
Dear NES and NIS Families,
As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we want to share important arrival and dismissal procedures for Nantucket Elementary School (NES) and Nantucket Intermediate School (NIS). These procedures are designed to keep students, families, and staff safe while helping traffic move as efficiently as possible.
Please review the procedures below with anyone who may be dropping off or picking up your child.
Arrival Procedures
NES:
- Grades K–2 students arriving by car should be dropped off at the first door (cafeteria).
- Pre-K students will get dropped off at the main loop; please drive all the way to the end of the loop. Do not stop at the NES entrance; staff will assist students to the NES front door.
- No one should get out of the vehicle during drop-off.
- The NES/NIS parking lot is reserved for staff and should not be used for family drop-off or parking.
- If you would like to park and walk your child to the building, you must park at the hockey rink and walk your child to the school.
- Staff assisting with arrival will be identifiable by their safety vests.
NIS:
- All NIS car drop-off will take place in the designated loop.
- Please pull all the way to the end of the loop before your child exits the vehicle.
- Staff assisting with arrival will be identifiable by their safety vests and will help direct traffic and students.
- If you would like to park and walk your child to the building, you must park at the hockey rink and walk your child to the school.
Dismissal Procedures
For the safety of students and to keep traffic moving:
- Do not park in the dismissal loop and get out of your vehicle.
- If you would like to walk to the building to meet your child, you must park at the hockey rink and walk to the school.
- There is only one lane of traffic in the loop. Please remain in the designated lane and follow the direction of staff.
- Please pull forward as directed rather than stopping to wait for your child in the middle of the loop.
- Staff assisting with dismissal at both NES and NIS will be identifiable by their safety vests and will help direct traffic and students.
Important Safety Reminders:
- Do Not Use the Bus Lane
- Do Not Park in Handicap-Accessible Spaces
Expect Heavier Traffic
Due to busing constraints this year, families should expect heavier traffic around NES and NIS during arrival and dismissal. We recognize that this may require additional time and patience.
Whenever possible, we encourage families to consider alternative transportation options, including:
- Walking to school
- Riding a pedal bike
- Carpooling when possible
Above all, please be patient, follow staff directions, and drive slowly and cautiously. Keeping students safe is our highest priority, and everyone's cooperation will help us create a smoother and safer arrival and dismissal experience for all.
Thank you for your partnership and for helping us keep our school community safe.
Sincerely,
Mellisa Devitt, Assistant Superintendent of Academic Operations

CPS/NHS
September 2026
Dear CPS and NHS Families,
As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we want to share important arrival, dismissal, and e-bike procedures for Cyrus Peirce School (CPS) and Nantucket High School (NHS). These procedures are designed to keep students, families, staff, pedestrians, and bus transportation safe while helping traffic move as efficiently as possible.
Please review the procedures below with anyone who may be dropping off, picking up, or riding an e-bike to school.
Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
All Car Traffic: Front or Back of CPS/NHS
All family vehicle traffic for both arrival and dismissal at CPS and NHS will enter through the front of the CPS/NHS campus on the Surfside Drive side or Sparks Road Side for the back entrance.
- Please follow the direction of staff and pull forward as directed.
- Do not pass other vehicles in the arrival or dismissal line.
- Do not park your vehicle and get out during arrival or dismissal.
- Please remain in your vehicle while waiting for your child.
- Staff assisting with arrival and dismissal will be identifiable by their safety vests.
- Please be patient and allow the line to move at the direction of staff. With the volume of vehicles during arrival and dismissal, traffic may move slowly at times.
Traffic Volume and Patience
We anticipate significant traffic volume during arrival and dismissal, particularly during peak times. Families should plan accordingly and allow additional time to get to and from school.
Please remember that passing vehicles, stopping unexpectedly, or getting out of your vehicle can create unsafe conditions and significantly slow the entire process.
We ask all families to:
- Follow staff directions.
- Remain in your vehicle.
- Do not pass other cars.
- Do not stop or park outside of the designated arrival and dismissal process.
- Drive slowly and cautiously.
- Allow extra time for arrival and dismissal.
- Be patient with staff, buses, pedestrians, and other drivers.
Our priority is to move students safely and efficiently. Your cooperation is essential to making this process work.
Alternative Transportation
Whenever possible, families are encouraged to consider alternatives to driving to and from school.
Students may be able to cross the street and use public Wave transportation rather than being dropped off or picked up by car. Walking, biking, carpooling, or using public transportation can help reduce the number of vehicles on campus and ease congestion during peak arrival and dismissal times.
E-Bike Procedures
Students who ride e-bikes to school must follow all school safety procedures. These expectations apply to all e-bikes brought to campus.
- Parents/guardians and students must complete the required e-bike safety class before an e-bike can be registered.
- All students riding an e-bike must wear an appropriate e-bike helmet.
- E-bikes must be walked, not ridden, once students are on campus.
- Students may not ride e-bikes through the school grounds, parking areas, walkways, or other campus areas.
- Students must follow all directions from school staff regarding e-bike storage and movement on campus.
- E-bikes must be registered with the school before being brought to campus.
E-Bike Violations
The safety of our students and community is our priority. Students who do not follow the e-bike expectations may lose the privilege of bringing an e-bike to school.
If an e-bike violation occurs, a parent/guardian will be required to come to school to retrieve the e-bike.
We appreciate families reviewing these expectations with their students before the start of the school year.
Thank you for your patience, cooperation, and partnership as we implement these procedures. Working together will help us create a safe and efficient arrival and dismissal process for all CPS and NHS students and families.
Sincerely,
Mellisa Devitt, Assistant Superintendent of Academic Operations
