Campus-Wide Master Plan
Fielding our Future Forever
The Nantucket Public Schools Campus Wide Master Plan is a multi-phase initiative guiding long-term facilities planning since 2013. Progress paused during Phase 9 in 2021, when the proposed turf project at Vito Capizzo Stadium did not move forward. In the 2026 school year, the district has renewed its focus on advancing the next phase of the plan, centered on athletic facility improvements that prioritize student safety and ADA compliance.
This phase includes upgrades to Vito Capizzo Stadium, installation of a synthetic turf field and track, and replacement and modernization of the grandstand. These enhancements are designed to support the continued growth of student athletic programs while preserving flexibility within the broader campus plan, should the need for a new school arise in the future.
Nantucket Public Schools recognizes the strong community interest surrounding the proposed athletic field improvements. The district’s athletic programs remain robust, with approximately 70 percent of high school students participating in fall, winter, or spring sports during the 2024–2025 school year. Natural grass fields have limited capacity and can become unsafe when overused. In recent years, heavy use has led to significant wear and deterioration. After evaluating multiple options, the district determined that replacing one existing field with a synthetic turf surface represents the safest and most cost-effective solution to meet student needs while maintaining high-quality, reliable facilities.
