“Every child deserves a champion -- an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be."
- Rita Pierson, educator
Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year!
Dear Students and Families,
We are very excited for our new school year at Nantucket Intermediate School. During this, our second year as a school community, we will continue to define our vision and core values for ensuring the success of all students in grades three, four, five and beyond.
We welcome several new staff members to NIS this school year along with some new program offerings. Grades four and five will participate in a weekly Spanish class this school year with Senorita Nash; Grade three will have two art classes weekly with Miss Held, a trimester of chorus, and a trimester of digital literacy; Grade four will have weekly digital literacy classes in addition to library with Mrs. Coburn; Grade five will participate in an introduction to band class in addition to general music with Mr. Sheppard. All of these opportunities will exist within the typical school schedule without interfering with academic instructional time. Further, all students will continue to have art, library, music, physical education, and guidance classes throughout the school year.
Ms. Donna Johnson, current ELA Coordinator for both NES and NIS, is a welcome addition to our staff especially as we embrace Readers Workshop as our primary resource and methodology for teaching reading. Our commitment to the implementation of reading and writing programs that grow competent and motivated readers and writers, along with your home support with reading will ensure maximum opportunities for student growth and achievement in these curricular areas. We are also excited about our year two implementation of Eureka Math. Each year our teachers and students are engaged in this rigorous program, the more likely they are to achieve success within the school year as mathematical concepts are developed and applied.
Our commitment to educating the whole child continues to exist and be fostered through our comprehensive programming. We also recognize that with you as our committed partners every child will learn, grow and achieve success!
Happy New School Year!
