Peanut policy developed for the Nantucket Elementary School

1. The child's classroom will be peanut/nut-free.
• Snacks eaten in the classroom will not contain nuts or peanuts
• Children who bring snacks containing nuts/peanuts will eat them in the activity space and wash their hands before returning to the classroom.
2.  A peanut/nut-free table will be provided in the cafeteria for children with nut/peanut allergies.
• Friends or classmates may eat at the peanut-free tables as long as they don't have peanut/nut products in their lunch.
• Children will be encouraged to wash their hands after eating to reduce the potential of cross-contamination of common materials in the school community (keyboards, balls, playground equipment, instruments, etc.)
• Tables will be cleaned with soap, water, and paper towels after each lunch.
3. If your child has eaten peanut gutter, peanuts, or nuts before coming to school, please, have them wash their hands to help prevent accidental cross-contamination of common items.
4. An Epi-pen or Epi-pen Jr. will be available in the nurse's office for each child with a known peanut/nut allergy.
5. An Emergency Action Care Plan should be signed by both the parent and the physician and kept on file in the nurse's office.
6. Staff members will be trained in the administration of the Epi-pen/Epi-pen Jr.

Peanut Letter for Parents

NANTUCKET ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 

Dear Parents, 

This letter is to inform you that a student in your child’s classroom has a severe peanut/nut allergy.  Strict avoidance of peanut/nut products is the only way to prevent a life threatening allergic reaction.  We are asking your assistance in providing the student with a safe learning environment.

If exposed to peanuts/nuts the student may develop a life-threatening allergic reaction that requires emergency medical treatment.  The greatest potential for exposure at school is to peanut products and nut products.  To reduce the risk of exposure, the classroom will be peanut/nut free.  Please, do not send any peanut or tree nut containing products for your child to eat during snack in the classroom.  Any exposure to peanuts or nuts through contact or ingestion can cause a severe reaction.  If your child has eaten peanuts, peanut butter, or nuts prior to coming to school, please be sure your child’s hands have been thoroughly washed prior to entering the school. 

Since lunch is eaten in the cafeteria, your child may bring peanut butter, peanut, or nut products for lunch.  In the cafeteria there will be a designated peanut-free table where any classmate without peanut or nut products can sit.  If your child sits at this table with a peanut or nut product, she/he will be asked to move to another table.  This plan will help to maintain safety in the classroom while allowing non-allergic classmates to enjoy peanut/nut products in a controlled environment.  The cafeteria at N.E.S. no longer serves peanut butter sandwiches or peanut butter cookies.  Following lunch, the children will wash their hands prior to going to recess (or returning to the class.)  The tables will be cleaned with soap, water and paper towels after each lunch.

Queridos Padres,

Esta carta es para informarle que tenemos un estudiante en el aula de su Niño que tiene una alergia severa contra el cacahuete/mani. La evitación estricta de productos de cacahuete/mani o que contenga este producto, es el único modo de impedir amenazar una vida con una  reacción alérgica. Pedimos su ayuda en proveer al estudiante con ambiente eduactivo seguro.

De ser expuesto a cacahuete/mani el estudiante puede desarrollar una reacción alérgica que amenaza su vida y requerira de un tratamiento médico de emergencia. El mayor potencial para la exposición en la escuela es a productos de cacahuete/mani. Para reducir el riesgo de exposición, en nuestra aula será prohibido comer cacahuete/mani durante la merienda. Por favor, no envíe ningún cacahuete o árbol cacahuete/ mani  que contiene producto que contenga cacahuete/mani para su niño  comer como merienda, el  contacto o ingestión puede causar una reacción severa al estudiantes alergicos. Si su niño ha comido cacahuetes o mantequilla de maní, antes de  llegar a la escuela, por favor este seguro que las manos de su niño esten bien lavadas antes de  entrar a la escuela.

Ya que el almuerzo es comido en la cafetería, su niño puede traer mantequilla de maní, cacahuete, o productos que contengan estas semillas para el almuerzo. En la cafetería habrá una mesa reservada para alumnus que son alergicos al cacahuete/mani, para de esta manera mantenerlos alejados al contacto con cacahuete, mani o mantequilla de mani designada cualquier compañero de clase sin cacahuete puede sentarse en esta mesa. Si su niño se sienta en esta mesa con  cacahuete/mani, le pedirán moverse a otra mesa. Este plan ayudará a mantener la seguridad en el aula permitiendo a compañeros de clase no alérgicos disfrutar de productos de cacahuete/mani en un ambiente controlado. La cafetería de N.E.S. ya no sirve emparedados de mantequilla de maní o galletas de mantequilla de maní. Despues del Almuerzo, los niños lavarán sus manos antes de ir a volver a la clase , mesas serán limpiadas con jabón, agua y toallas de papel después de cada almuerzo.
